Supplemental Environmental Project Supporting the Lafayette Fire Department
As part of an U.S. EPA-approved Supplemental Environmental Project, Ice Cream Specialties is supporting the Special Operations Division of the Lafayette Fire Department with over $53,000 in new personal protective equipment (PPE), equipment upgrades, and specialized training to respond to hazardous materials incidents.
The new and upgraded equipment includes:
- New Level A HAZMAT suits, which will replace aging HAZMAT suits and allow the Department to meet new safety standards;
- New portable multi-gas monitors that enable immediate detection of multiple gases, so that teams can make quicker and safer decisions when responding to incidents that potentially involve hazardous materials;
- An upgraded meter calibration station for the multi-gas monitors to ensure monitors are working properly before response teams enter a potentially hazardous environment; and
- New leak detection equipment, which will allow better detection and assessment of refrigerant leaks.
The ICS funds will also allow Department personnel to enroll in a Confined Space Rescuer Technician Course, which provides instruction on safely responding to hazardous materials in small or confined spaces.
In addition to the new equipment and training support, Ice Cream Specialties has also installed a remote ammonia detection system at its Lafayette Plant. The remote system will allow first responders to collect data about a potential release before entering any structures and significantly increases the safety and effectiveness of any emergency response actions.
The Lafayette Fire Department keeps our community safe by responding to fires and other emergencies. These incidents may involve hazardous materials, including hazardous gases, particularly when the emergencies occur in industrial settings. PPE, specialized detection equipment, and training focused on this aspect of emergency response helps keep Department team members safe and ensures they can provide the appropriate incident response to protect the community. Ice Cream Specialties appreciates the Lafayette Fire Department’s work and thanks the team for their service.
Ice Cream Specialties undertook this Supplemental Environmental Project under the settlement of the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s enforcement action against Ice Cream Specialties for alleged violations of the Chemical Accident Prevention Provisions at 40 C.F.R. Part 68.
